Lines down, power out, Ryan and points south

Concussively detonating all illusions of renewed intelligence and sleep, this morning's jackhammers were succeeded by a noise so relentlessly loud and penetrating it was like waking up inside a turbine. It vibrated the bones in our chests. It was not just unpleasantly pitched, it was shockingly painful. Passing it on the street was so air-shattering I couldn't understand how it was legal to run on a residential street without warning all households within at least the three-block radius I had to walk before I began to feel that earplugs even meant anything. I still can't. Hestia had made her nest in the hall closet. I am made of adrenaline. [edit] The culprit seems to have been a vacuum extraction truck. Our neighborhood should have been issued airport worker ear protection.

Time and direction don't matter at all.

UGH. I was going to say, whatever the people paid to make this noise are provided for protection should be given to the neighborhood at large. But maybe they aren't provided either. I'm not very impressed with this city right now.

Well fuck, "manufacturers often report sound levels exceeding 90 dBA for vacuum extraction trucks." (85 decibels is dangerous for hearing loss.) One company proudly reports all their trucks are under 100 dba! That is unbelievable. I am so sorry.

The moment I saw your subject line I was very apprehensive indeed, well chosen, I abhor the need.

And indeed, I would not myself have given a thought to the people making the hellish noise, only to getting the fuck out of there.

The FUUUUCK

There have been big power drills going on next to us all morning but a vacuum extraction truck! What do you even need a fucking vacuum extraction truck for??

"Vacuum trucks, also known as vacuum tankers, are often used by cities to handle large-scale liquid and sludge clean up, most commonly in sewer and septic system maintenance. They can also be used in industrial and municipal settings to suction water and debris left from hydro-excavation or drilling jobs."

Apparently those can get used when work trenches collapse or even hazmat emergencies! The fuck!

This sounds appalling! I'm so sorry you're having to deal with it!

I would, and I genuinely mean this, be willing to make a politely but firmly worded inquiry call to your city's public works department on behalf of residents who I would not name - not my place, and privacy maintains - to find out just WTFFF is going on over there, and to nail down a timeline for you. Verifiable health issues caused by the construction nightmare not raised unless allowed by you. ... I know, you don't know me beyond acquaintance circles, let alone well enough to trust me with relevant info, but for what it's worth, the offer stands.

In other words, the bloody *hell* are they doing? :(

Everything you're saying about this construction work sounds utterly hellish. I get annoyed enough by lawnmowers. I'm so sorry they're putting you through this, and I hope it stops forever very soon!
