The backstory for the scientist who tries to stop Hitler from ever having been born is basically "what if 'Braun' had died, but his wife and kid had lived and she used his notes to fake new identities?" It's a further twist of the screw, in a way, because the kid grows up sincerely believing he and his mother are Holocaust survivors, and then she tells him the truth on her deathbed.
