My initial search did not turn up the ATU list itself

Thanks for letting me know what happened! I can see how that online index did not help. Here's the bones of the Russian version, which I need to check if I encountered first in the disintegratingly old book of Russian folktales which belonged originally to my mother. I read so many books of folk and fairy tales as a child, I can trace my discoveries of some stories and others I have no idea where they turned up in the welter.
